Lower School
Welcome to Lower School!
Our academic programs in grades one through four are designed to challenge students and to reflect Buckley’s philosophy of academic excellence. The curriculum is rigorous and innovative. Students receive instruction in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, geography, world languages, art, music, and technology. With the understanding that children learn by connecting new experiences with prior knowledge, experienced teachers thoughtfully prepare activities to promote discussion, and encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They integrate the different subject areas through a thematic approach so that learning is meaningful and relevant. Since children learn in different ways, our faculty presents concepts and skills using methods that reach each child. Small classes enable teachers to provide individual attention and to differentiate instruction.
Buckley’s affiliation with Columbia University Teachers College’s Advancing Literacy program drives and informs our teaching of reading and writing and ensures that our teachers and students are exposed to the latest research in literacy. Our children become strong and effective communicators.
The world our children inherit will be very different from ours. By exposing our students to good literature, useful research skills, sound student habits, and organizational skills, they become life-long learners. Furthermore, with the ability to know where and how to find the information they need, as well as how to communicate constructively and work with others, they will be well prepared for the future awaiting them.
