Third Graders Bring History to Life with Biography Project

January 17, 2025 –  Buckley Country Day School’s third-grade students transported their audience through time with an engaging biography project. The event was the culmination of weeks of research, writing, and creativity as students explored the lives of famous historical figures. Each student chose a person who made a significant impact on history, from world leaders and trailblazing scientists to artists, athletes, and activists.

Dressed as their chosen figures, the students presented their findings to an enthusiastic audience of parents, faculty, and peers who gathered on Friday morning. The Reception Room buzzed with energy as Albert Einstein, Misty Copeland, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Greta Thunberg, among others, shared their incredible stories. The presentations combined fascinating facts, personal anecdotes, and a touch of humor, bringing history to life in a way only third graders can.

“It’s amazing to see how much they’ve learned and the confidence they’ve developed,” said Mrs. Downing, one of the third-grade teachers.  Mrs. Dossena added, “This project helps our students understand the importance of these historical figures while honing their research, writing, and public speaking skills.”

The students began their projects by selecting a figure they admired and conducting research using books, online resources, and classroom materials. They then crafted a written report, created slide decks, and prepared costumes to represent their chosen icons. Finally, they worked on their presentations, rehearsing with teachers and classmates to perfect their delivery.

Parents were impressed not only by the students’ knowledge but also by their enthusiasm and creativity. 

The third-grade biography project is swiftly becoming a cherished tradition at Buckley, offering students a chance to connect with the past while developing important skills for the future.
